Why You’ll Love It

  • It’s slightly sweet.
  • It’s slightly tangy.
  • It’s made with just 4 ingredients.
  • It can be made ahead.
  • It’s prepped, primed and ready in 15 minutes or less.

How to Serve

Cranberry sauce isn’t just for turkey! It pairs beautifully with chicken, pork and even as a topping for desserts like no-bake cheesecake or vanilla ice cream. Are you ready for all this sauce has to offer? Take a deep breath, because you can use this delectable sauce-spread-condiment-relish in the following dozen (and then some!) ways:

  • A Thanksgiving side dish
  • A toast topper (hello, goat cheese bruschetta!)
  • A salad dressing base
  • A yogurt parfait topping
  • A leftover dessert show-stopper
  • A smoothie mix-in
  • A whipped brie topping
  • A charcuterie board addition
  • A grilled cheese picker-upper
  • A leftover waffle topping
  • A sandwich spread (try my recipe for leftover turkey sliders with cranberry sauce!)
  • A muffin or quickbread mix-in

The list goes on and on! And while I have, admittedly, been a canned cranberry sauce fan in the past (old habits die hard), one taste of this homemade orange cranberry sauce and I was no longer missing the sliceable and ever-so-jellied tube-o-cran.

Make-Ahead Tip: Whip up this sauce a day in advance to really give the flavors a chance to develop, then serve it hot, cold or room temp alongside your Thanksgiving turkey or any of the dozen-and-one ways listed above.

Just 4 Ingredients

Orange Cranberry Sauce (15-Minute Recipe!) (3)
  • Orange: Serves as a dual-purpose ingredient in this recipe, providing both zest and juice.
  • Fresh or frozen cranberries: If you’re starting with frozen cranberries, thaw them first then continue with the recipe as written.
  • Sugar: Used to sweeten the sauce and balance the tartness of the cranberries. The amount can be adjusted according to personal preference. Add more for a sweeter sauce or less if you prefer a tangier flavor.
  • Light brown sugar: Adds a subtle molasses flavor and richness.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

How to Make Orange Cranberry Sauce

  1. Zest and juice the orange. Zest the orange and add 1 tablespoon of the zest to a medium saucepan then cut the orange in half and squeeze all of the juice from both halves into the saucepan.
  2. Cook the cranberries. Add the cranberries, sugar and brown sugar to the saucepan and cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it has thickened and the cranberries begin to pop, 8 to 10 minutes.

  1. Cool and serve. Remove the cranberry relish from the heat and let it cool before serving.

Kelly’s Note: The sauce will thicken significantly as it cools.

Recipe Tips

  • Fresh vs. Frozen Cranberries: Both fresh and frozen cranberries work well in this recipe, so use what you have on hand. If using frozen, thaw them first.
  • Zest Like a Pro: Be careful to only zest the orange part, avoiding the bitter white pith.
  • Adjust Sweetness: Taste the sauce as it cooks and adjust the sweetness accordingly. If you prefer a sweeter sauce, add a bit more sugar.
  • Make-Ahead: This sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.

How to Store

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Check out my list below for creative ways to use up your leftover sauce!

How to Freeze

If you want to extend the shelf life, cranberry sauce can be frozen. Place it in a freezer-safe container, leaving some space at the top to account for expansion. It can be frozen for up to 2-3 months.

Ways to Use Leftover Cranberry Sauce After the Holidays

The holidays are over and you’ve got a container of leftover cranberry sauce you don’t want to go to waste. Transform those leftovers into delicious next-day eats with these recipes:

  • Turkey Sliders with Leftover Cranberry Sauce – adds a burst of flavor to these sandwiches starring all the holiday leftovers
  • Thanksgiving Leftover Turkey and Stuffing Muffins – top with leftover sauce for a sweet and tangy element that perfectly complements the savory turkey and stuffing
  • Leftover Stuffing Waffles – top them with a dollop of cranberry sauce for a deliciously sweet and savory combination

  • Baked Brie Bites – creamy brie, tangy cranberry and buttery puff pastry is a winning combo

Common Questions

What consistency should cranberry sauce be?

The consistency is really up to what you like best! Typically, it’s a thick, saucy texture with some whole or broken cranberries. It should coat the back of a spoon and hold its shape, but not be too gelatinous. Whether you prefer it smooth like jelly or with a bit of berry chunkiness, it’s all about your personal taste. Adjust the cooking time to get it just right for you!

How do I avoid a sauce that’s too tart?

Adjusting the sweetness is key. Taste the sauce as it cooks and add sugar gradually until it reaches your desired sweetness.

Can I make cranberry sauce in advance? How long does it keep?

Absolutely! Homemade cranberry sauce can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can also freeze it for longer storage. Just be sure to use airtight containers to maintain freshness.

What can I do if my cranberry sauce is too thin?

If your sauce is thinner than desired, you can continue simmering it for a few more minutes to evaporate excess liquid and achieve a thicker consistency. Keep in mind that the sauce will thicken significantly as it cools.

Can I make cranberry sauce without sugar?

Sure! Honey, maple syrup or agave nectar can all be used if you prefer a sauce with less refined sugar. Adjust the quantity based on your taste preferences.

FAQs

What takes the bitterness out of cranberry sauce? ›

"Instead, start by stirring in one tablespoon maple syrup and one teaspoon of a sweet drink like apple juice, orange juice, or fruity white or red wine. Add more to taste. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt (in small amounts, it intensifies sweetness)."

How long does orange cranberry sauce last? ›

If you need to store cranberry sauce from a can that's been opened, you really just have one option: the refrigerator. Start by transferring your cranberry sauce from the can to an airtight container, and then you can safely leave it in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Why won't my cranberry sauce set? ›

One possibility is that you may not have used enough sugar: Sugar helps the sauce firm up, so be sure to use the full amount called for in a recipe. Another possibility is that the cranberries need to boil for longer, releasing their pectin and ensuring a jelly consistency.

How many cans of cranberry sauce does Ocean Spray make? ›

70 million is the number of cans of cranberry sauce Ocean Spray produces a year.

How to jazz up cranberry sauce? ›

Top with dried or fresh fruits

Sure, you can go all meta with some dried cranberries or sliced fresh raw cranberries, but I also like to think about complementary flavors — dried cherries, dried mulberries, golden raisins, chopped apricots. All work great with cranberry sauce.

What thickens cranberry sauce? ›

The sugar in the syrup helps the mixture thicken. It could also be because you haven't cooked the mixture long enough. The cranberries need to cook long enough to burst so that they release plenty of pectin which is a thickener naturally found in cranberries.

Does orange sauce go bad? ›

You can tell if orange sauce has gone bad by checking for visible molds, discoloration, or an off smell. If the sauce has separated or changed color, that's another sign that it may be time to discard.

Can dogs eat cranberries? ›

Both fresh and dried cranberries are safe to feed to dogs in small quantities. Whether your dog will like this tart treat is another question. Either way, moderation is important when feeding cranberries to dogs, as with any treat, as too many can lead to an upset stomach.

Can you freeze cranberry orange sauce? ›

Yes, when stored properly, you can freeze leftover homemade cranberry sauce. Before freezing, keep three important principles in mind: cool it, wrap it and label it (the same rules apply when freezing homemade meals). First, it's important that any cooked food has cooled down before it goes into the freezer.

Why is my homemade cranberry sauce runny? ›

Mistake #2: Your Cranberry Sauce Is Too Runny

You may have added too much liquid to the cranberries. In addition to pectin, cranberries contain water, which means you only need to add a splash of liquid to get the cooking going. Add too much and you'll be stirring at the stove much longer than expected.

Why is cranberry sauce packaged upside down? ›

The cans are "filled and labeled upside down with the rounded edge on top and the sharp can-like edge on the bottom to keep the jelly whole." This creates an air bubble vacuum on the rounded side (the top) so customers "can swipe the edge of the can with a knife to break the vacuum and the log will easily slide out."

Why do you open a can of cranberry sauce upside down? ›

But why? Ocean Spray says this is to get the cranberry sauce out in one intact piece. “The rounded part of the can that looks like the bottom has an air bubble in it,” Ocean Spray's representative explains. The bubble is there so you can “break the seal the sauce makes with the can.”

Is it OK to drink Ocean Spray Cranberry juice Everyday? ›

Although cranberry juice is safe to consume in moderation, drinking too much can cause side effects such as upset stomach, diarrhea, and blood sugar spikes. In the past, it was believed that cranberry juice can slow the growth of bacteria and therefore is useful in treating urinary tract infections.

Can diabetics eat jellied cranberry sauce? ›

The Bottom Line. If you have diabetes, you can still enjoy cranberry sauce, but with a few considerations. First, most traditional cranberry sauces have lots of added sugar, so offer to make it yourself for the holiday gathering so you can control how much is added.

Can cranberry sauce go bad? ›

After a few years, if the can is undented, the cranberry sauce's texture, color, or flavor may change, but it likely won't be dangerous. Again, use your senses to test whether the cranberry sauce is still good. Signs of spoilage include cans that are leaking, rusting, bulging, or severely dented.

How do you fix bitter cranberry juice? ›

My recommendation would be to warm it up a tad in a pot, mix in a little lime juice, about twice as much apple juice, and a pinch of sugar and salt. Pour it in a pitcher, add some ice cubes, and refrigerate.

How do you take the tartness out of cranberries? ›

Anything from a drizzle of honey to agave, maple syrup, or molasses will also fare well. After a few minutes of maceration, the sour fruit juices will mix with the sugar and alleviate some of the cranberries' natural tartness.

How do you sweeten bitter cranberry juice? ›

Add agave nectar to the cranberry citrus mixture to your taste. I started with 1/2 cup and ended up with 1 cup of nectar to the 9 cups of juice. You could also use 1/2 cup of white sugar or 1/2 cup of honey for this. Just taste test as you go to achieve your desired sweetness.

Why are my cranberry bitter? ›

Cranberries are generally considered safe whether they are cooked or raw. However, because of their notoriously bitter, sharp taste, most people prefer not to eat them raw or unsweetened. This bitterness is due to the high tannin content of cranberries.
