What is the best cheese for a grilled cheese sandwich?

Depending on your taste preference, there are a variety of cheeses that can make excellent grilled cheese sandwiches. The most popular types of cheese used to make grilled cheese sandwiches are:

  • Colby – this cheese might look identical to some cheddar cheese out there, but many argue it is the absolute best cheese to use for a grilled cheese sandwich. It is often combined with Monterrey Jack and Swiss cheeses on grilled cheese sandwiches.
  • Provolone – this cheese can give an Italian twist on your grilled cheese sandwich and goes especially well with pesto.
  • Cheddar – when you think of a grilled cheese sandwich, you are most likely thinking of cheddar cheese. This delicious cheese can range from mild to sharp in flavor so you can get the exact taste you are looking for.
  • Muenster – this soft cheese is perfect for spreading on a grilled sandwich.
  • Monterrey Jack – this flavorful cheese melts well for the gooey grilled cheese sandwich of your dreams.

This easy recipe is great as a main course or as an appetizer. You really can’t go wrong! The melted cheese mixed with the Hawaiian sweet rolls is heavenly. This is an easy weeknight dinner everyone will love! The only thing is that it won’t keep well in your fridge for 3-4 days, but it doesn’t even matter because there probably won’t be leftovers anyway – these are that good. The best way to make these is in a baking pan in the oven!

Grilled Cheese with Mayo:

Not everyone loves mayonnaise on their grilled cheese sandwich, but using mayo results in a more flavorful, moist sandwich.

Some people even prefer spreading a thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside of their grilled cheese before cooking it for a crispy texture and rich golden color.

People also like using mayonnaise on the outside of their grilled cheese rather than butter because it has a higher smoke point, which means it will be less likely to burn when cooking.

If mayo isn’t your thing, you could always use butter or mayonnaise substitutes but the flavor and texture may differ slightly.

Tips for making the best grilled cheese sandwich:

Making an amazing grilled cheese sandwich doesn’t sound too difficult, but be sure to follow these tips to make the best grilled cheese sandwich ever.

  1. Use fat to coat the bread. Just like these Grilled Cheese Sliders use mayonnaise to coat the rolls, be sure to have some sort of butter or mayo so your sandwich doesn’t come out dry.
  2. Don’t add too much cheese. You might think there is no such thing as too much cheese, but you don’t want cheese oozing out every side of your grilled cheese sandwich when you go to eat it.
  3. Don’t slice the cheese too thick. If your cheese is cut too thick it will have a hard time melting all the way through resulting in burnt bread. Shredded cheese melts easier and is perfect for grilled cheese sandwiches.
  4. Don’t use cheese that won’t melt well. Using any of the cheeses mentioned above will result in the melty, gooey, cheesy goodness you are looking for. Avoid using hard, aged cheeses like Parmesan or crumbly cheese like feta or goat cheese.
  5. Keep the heat low. By cooking your grilled cheese sandwich over low heat, you will get a perfectly crisp outside that won’t be burned and a cheesy inside. If your heat is too high it will result in a burned outside and cheese that never melted on the inside. Nobody wants that!

My favorite formula for grilled cheese comes from the tv show, Jane the Virgin. How many slices of cheese should you put on a grilled cheese? ›

For each grilled cheese, you'll need two slices of bread, at least 1 tablespoon of butter, and 2-4 slices of cheese (depending how gooey you like it). American, Cheddar, Swiss, muenster or Gouda all work well—feel free to mix and match your cheeses.

Cheddar and Monterey Jack are a match made in gooey heaven, especially when they're blanketed in tons of crisp topping. At last, a recipe that's as easy as the boxed stuff, but so much tastier. It relies on Monterey Jack, Parmesan and two smooth melters: American cheese and cream cheese.
